Driving an hour due south from Lourdes put us right in the middle of the Pyrenees, at the little town of Gavarnie. The ridge here again marks the border between France and Spain, but the peaks are higher, around 10,000 feet, and laced with snow. I'm glad I wore my long underwear! The cool fall air with its smell of dry leaves, the yellows, oranges and reds mixed with evergreen overhead, and the crashing waterfalls, were a feast for our senses.
